Digestive Health Myths – Separating Fact from Fiction

Every day, our team at Gastroenterology Associates of the Piedmont (GAP) talks with patients who are confused—or even worried—because of digestive health myths they’ve heard online, from friends, or on social media. While some myths are harmless, others can delay diagnosis and proper treatment. As gastroenterology specialists, we believe accurate, evidence-based information is essential for protecting your digestive system and overall health.

If you’re experiencing ongoing digestive symptoms or have concerns about your GI health, you don’t have to navigate this alone—call 336-448-2427 to schedule an appointment with our team. Below, we address common misconceptions, explain the facts, and help you understand when it’s time to seek professional care.

Why Digestive Health Myths Can Be Harmful

Many GI health misconceptions oversimplify complex medical conditions. Digestive disorders often involve genetics, immune function, lifestyle factors, and underlying disease processes—not just what you eat or how old you are. Believing myths can lead people to ignore symptoms, self-diagnose, or delay seeing a specialist.

Myth #1: “Inflammatory Bowel Disease Is Just a Bad Diet”

One of the most common inflammatory bowel disease misconceptions is that conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are caused solely by poor food choices.

The Facts

IBD is a chronic inflammatory condition driven by an abnormal immune response. Diet does not cause IBD, though certain foods may worsen symptoms during flares. A common question we hear is, “Is IBD caused by diet?” The evidence-based answer is no—diet is only one part of symptom management, not the root cause.

When to Get Help

Ongoing diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, fatigue, or unintended weight loss should always be evaluated by a gastroenterology provider.

Myth #2: “Liver Disease Only Happens to Heavy Drinkers”

Alcohol-related liver disease is well known, but it’s far from the only cause.

The Facts

There are many causes of liver disease other than alcohol, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), obesity and metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, viral hepatitis, and certain medications or genetic conditions. Many forms of liver disease develop silently, without noticeable symptoms at first.

When to Get Help

Abnormal liver blood tests, fatigue, jaundice, or a family history of liver disease warrant further evaluation.

Myth #3: “Hemorrhoids Only Happen to Older People”

Hemorrhoids are often thought of as an age-related issue, but that’s not the full story.

The Facts

Adults of all ages can develop hemorrhoids. Common hemorrhoid risk factors include chronic constipation or diarrhea, straining during bowel movements, pregnancy, prolonged sitting, and low-fiber diets. Rectal bleeding should never be automatically dismissed as “just hemorrhoids.”

When to Get Help

Persistent bleeding, pain, or symptoms that don’t improve with conservative treatment should be checked by a specialist.

Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Recognizing the signs of serious digestive problems is key to early diagnosis and better outcomes. These include blood in the stool or black stools, persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, chronic heartburn or trouble swallowing, and long-lasting diarrhea or constipation. If symptoms last more than a few weeks or worsen, it’s time to seek care.

When to See a Gastroenterologist

Many patients ask us when to see a gastroenterologist. We recommend scheduling an appointment if digestive symptoms are persistent or recurring, symptoms interfere with daily life, there is a family history of GI or liver disease, or you need diagnostic testing, treatment, or preventive screening. Early evaluation can prevent complications and provide peace of mind.
