Originally from western North Carolina, Dr. Cornella attended the University of North Carolina for his undergraduate education, where he graduated with honors with a degree in Biology. He stayed in Chapel Hill to obtain his medical degree at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Cornella completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia, where he had the distinction of serving as Chief Resident. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Virginia.
He is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Affiliations include the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the North Carolina Society of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Cornella enjoys treating general gastroenterology issues, and is particularly interested in inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, reflux disease, and colon cancer prevention. He believes in shared medical decision-making with his patients and values patient education.
In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and young son, running, and pulling for the Tar Heels!
