Orbera Weight Loss Balloon
Orbera is a non-surgical, FDA approved procedure to assist those who have struggled to lose weight. It consists of a soft, durable balloon designed to occupy space comfortably in the stomach, causing a feeling of fullness and therefore assisting in portion control. Along with the placement of the balloon, patients are paired with a team of experts to help them with a customized diet and exercise plan to fit their lifestyle. By following the given treatment plan, patients are expected to lose an average of three times the weight they would without the assistance of Orbera.
What can I expect during the procedure?
This outpatient procedure generally only takes 20-30 minutes, however the appointment will be slightly longer in order to undergo preparation and recovery from sedation. Once sedated, the uninflated balloon is passed by way of the patient’s mouth, esophagus and into the stomach using a small flexible tube with a camera (an upper GI endoscopy.) Once in place, the balloon is filled with sterile saline. After 6 months, the patient returns for another endoscopy where the balloon is drained and removed from the stomach by way of the esophagus and mouth. Recovery is minimal and patients can return to normal activities the following day.
Do I qualify for the procedure?
Those who qualify for Orbera are adults with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 who have been unable to lose weight through diet and exercise. Furthermore, one must be willing to make healthy lifestyle changes and remain medically supervised throughout the program.
